  • Recommended materials for my LA class: 2018 - 19 School Year

       1. blue or black pens for assignments.

** Most assignments will be done on the laptop through Schoology, but you should always have something to write with in class.

       2. 1 Composition Notebook (marble-style notebook) - (no spiral notebooks or perforated pages). You may get college ruled or wide ruled, cardboard or plastic cover - your choice.

** This will be used for Reader's Workshop.

       3. One 2-pocket folder for handouts (I try to go as paperless as possible. Most handouts are shared with students on Schoology, and they can save them in their LA folder on their laptop). On occasion, we do have handouts or papers that need to be kept. These can be kept in this sturdy folder.

       4. Sticky/Post-it notes (3x3 size) for Reader's Workshop.

** I will have some in class, but you will need some to use at home. Any brand or color is fine.

       5. Fiction Book of Choice - for Reader's Workshop - Students can choose a book from my classroom library (I have many great books from various genres from current to classic), the media center, the public library, or bring one from home. ** IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO BUY BOOKS.

** Be sure your book is on your reading level and is approved by your parent/guardian! (We will discuss how to pick "the just right book" in class).

** I suggest putting your book into a gallon-sized ziplock bag to protect it. Then you can slip this into your laptop string bag. This way you will always remember to bring it home & then back to school each day.

   6. School Provided Laptop - You should always have your laptop in class with you each day & bring it home each night.

** Be sure to charge your laptop each night

** Suggestion: Do not leave your laptop plugged in all night to charge or continually charge it. Get in the habit of allowing the battery to drain to close to 0% & then charge it to 100%. Once it hits 100% - UNPLUG it. Overcharging damages the battery & eventually the laptop will not hold a charge as long as it used to.

** Bring YOUR charger in your laptop bag each day, just in case you need to charge it. I will allow charging in the classroom now and then. This should not happen regularly though. It is YOUR responsibility to charge your laptop AT HOME!

   7. You may want to get a pair of earbuds if you don't already have them (nothing fancy - the dollar store has them!) Sometimes we need them for videos and podcasts. You will also need them for the PARCC later in the year. ** Leave your fancy headphones or wireless earbuds at home!!

SCHOOLOGY - I post everything we are doing on Schoology. Your child has an LA page & can show it to you.  I try my best to provide updated and helpful information/resources for students on this site. Please always check Schoology first. It is likely that the answer to your question is right there.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

** REMEMBER: Reading summaries like sparknotes or cliffnotes is NOT the same as reading the novel! Students will be bringing a book and/or homework each day and should be reading for at least 20 minutes each night!

** THERE IS NO NEED TO BUY BOOKS! WE HAVE A LARGE CLASSROOM LIBRARY & MEDIA CENTER YOU CAN BORROW FROM. You can also get books from the Howell library. If they don't have the book you are looking for, often they can get it from another location for you.

*** IF YOU NEED TO LOOK FOR A NEW BOOK, TRY THIS SITE: http://www.yournextread.com/us/

*** REMIND 101 will be used to post assignments & announcements. I will also post assignments on Schoology (under UPDATES).

Students should always write down HW in class just in case.
