Course Goal and Objectives

Common Core English Language Arts requires students to read, write, speak, listen, and use language effectively as well as develop literary skills through literature and more complex informational texts that build knowledge in a variety of content areas.  Emphasis is placed on answering a range of text-dependent questions that require inferences and evidence based on careful attention to the text.  Lessons will focus on rigor, critical-thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills necessary for success in college, career, and life.

The Georgia Milestones Assessment System (GMAS)

The Georgia Milestones Assessment System is a comprehensive summative assessment program for grades 3 -12.  Georgia Milestones measures how well students have learned the knowledge and skills outlined in the state-adopted content standards in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.  Students in grades 3 through 8 will take an end-of-grade assessment in each content area, while high school students will take an end-of-course assessment for each of the eight courses designated by the State Board of Education.

Features the Georgia Milestone Assessment System includes:

  • Open-ended (constructed-response) items in language arts and mathematics (all grades and courses);
  • A writing component (in response to passages read by students) at every grade level and course within the language arts assessment;
  • Norm-referenced items in all content areas and courses, to complement the criterion-referenced information and to provide a national comparison; and
  • Transition to online administration over time, with online administration considered the primary mode of administration and paper-pencil as back up until the transition is complete.

Instructional Standards

The Georgia Department of Education implemented its new testing system, the Georgia Milestones Assessment System (GMAS) during the 2014-2015 school year.  GMAS is designed to test students on Georgia’s curriculum.  Students will be tested in Language, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.  The Language portion of the test will cover reading, language arts, and writing.  For additional information review the following website: http://www.pta.org/advocacy/content.cfm? Item Number=3816

Textbook

Pearson My Perspectives English Language Arts Grade 7

My Perspectives is a English Language Arts Curriculum for Grades 6–12 that values the perspective of the learner, collectively and individually, and provides next-generation learning experiences that promote higher achievement and develop the competencies needed for college and career readiness. This dynamic Pearson program creates an interactive, engaging, and relevant learning environment through readings, meaningful activities, and purposeful performance tasks. My Perspectives encourages social collaboration as well as student ownership of learning through goal setting, choice, and reflection.

Academic Assignments

The student will be given weekly tests and/or quizzes over previous lessons, literary terms, and vocabulary.  Homework will consist of reading for the next day’s assignment, review of previous lessons, and completion of the daily grammar practice exercises.  Each class activity will consist of a “Sponge Activity” over the previous night’s assignment or to introduce a new lesson.  Students will have a special project each nine weeks, which will determine mastery levels of the nine weeks’ lessons.  You will learn to identify and analyze the four levels of grammar: parts of speech, parts of a sentence, phrases, and clauses.

Homework

Homework will be assigned Monday thru Thursday and on Fridays as needed.  Homework is turned in during homeroom.  If homework is not turned in on time, the student will receive a zero for that assignment.  Homework will NOT be accepted late from students who are present during homeroom.

Grading Criteria

Each nine weeks grade will consist of the following:

Performance Task/Tests                     40%

Quiz                                                    20%

Classwork                                           30%

Homework                                          10%

Grading Scale

All students are expected to do their best at all times and illustrate mastery on the content area.  Meaning, the student will submit all assignments on scheduled due date.  The students are prepared for learning on a daily basic by bringing all their learning tools to class (books, paper, and pens.)  The student participates in class activities and group work.  The students will make- up all missing assignments due to absences.  The students will complete homework assignments and will be ready for class discussions.  Tests and quizzes will be made up the day the student returns to school from an EXCUSED ABSENCE and will be taken during the class (unless otherwise indicated.   Please be mindful to refer to PowerSchool NOT CANVAS for your ELA grade.  Also, grades are weighted not averaged.
