For the week of June 8th, there will not be a STEAM assignment posted on my website. I will be joining your whole class Zoom call on Monday. Think of one of your favorite memories from STEAM class this school year. Was it something you built, learned about, etc? I am going to ask you to share on the Zoom call. Can’t wait to hear all about them.

Love,

Ms. Vitale

* I am leaving the choice board on here, if you feel like working on another choice you can, but you do not have to.

Notes about this week:

  • I gave you two links below. PBS Kids engineering game page and individual links to the games themself.

  • You do not have to report back to me letting me know you worked on this activity

  • However, if you really enjoyed it or found some parts difficult, then you may send me a video through Flipgrid, or send me an email with what your child would like to tell me.

  • I have tried this website and these specific games on both an iPad and a laptop. They should work for whichever device you are using. If you have any issues just let me know.

  • If for some reason it asks you to log in or create an account, creating an account is not harmful. It does not ask for personal information. (optional though)

  • Warning: the games I chose may be difficult. Just try your best, if you get frustrated just stop.

  • These are the suggested games for this week. If you want to go back and play Hamster Run you can after you try these first.

  • You may also try another game on the website, just know some only work on certain devices.

Week of May 4th:

This week you are going to listen to the story, Iggy Peck Architect, by Andrea Beaty.

Even if you already know this story, don’t forget good readers reread. As you are listening to the story, think about the engineering going on in the story. To listen to the story, please click on the youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18B8WMJdTCQ

Challenge: construct a structure using two-dimensional shapes and/or  three- dimensional shapes.

Plan the first day, decide what you are going to do.

Second Day- start building

Suggested Materials: fruit snacks, toothpicks, marshmallows, blocks or models of three-dimensional shapes,( honestly anything you have in your house)

Here are vocabulary cards for help:

Here is a picture of an example for guidance:

Here are a couple task card, if you do not have any of those materials at home:

It is your choice what you decide to construct. Maybe listening to the story you were inspired to create something else based on the events.

Show me your creation through email or flipgrid. Have fun engineering!

You can work on this both days I have you during the week. You can even turn it in by Friday if needed.

As per my email, we will continue our Engineering Unit. This is where students will continue to explore the engineering design process. Throughout this process, students will brainstorm, plan, create, and evaluate as well as other steps.

Since last week, they built and created inventions, this week we are going to work on engineering online games. My goal is to alternate weeks of building and then online activities.

For example:

Week A:

Monday STEAM: Planning

Tuesday Enrichment: Building ( can be handed in by Friday)

Week B:

Monday STEAM: Online Activity

Tuesday Enrichment: Online Activity

  • These weeks may not only be online activities, I may switch it up but for now this is how I planned it out.

*Also, as your household finishes up a roll of toliet paper or paper towels, if possible, can you please hold on to the empty roll. I would like to do an assignment with them in a couple weeks. Thanks!

Monday, April 27th:Online Engineering Game

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I hope everyone had a restful spring break! Welcome to 4th marking period :) We are still in out engineering unit.

This week we celebrate Earth Day! We will be using both our STEAM and Enrichment periods this week to learn about Earth Day.

April 20th: Today, you will watch this video about Earth Day. Click on this link to view the video.

https://www.generationgenius.com/?share=6164C

After you watch the video, you can test yourself on what you learned using the link below. If it does not work, don't worry about it.

https://quizizz.com/join/quiz/5e838c5bd4ab70001caea61f/start?studentShare=true

Then, I would like you to ASK, IMAGINE, and PLAN a creation out of recyclable materials.

-what would it look like?

-what would this invention do?

OR if you have these materials you can try this creation:

On a piece of paper, or if you have a whiteboard at home: PLAN your creation out. Draw a sketch of what it would look like. Label or write certain materials you would use to create it.

When you are done with your sketch hold on to it. You will need it tomorrow for Enrichment.

April 21st: Enrichment: Yesterday, you learned about Earth Day. You learned about the 3 R's: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. You also planning out a creation that you can make with recyclable materials. Today, you will build your creation. OR work on the DIY activity if you have those materials and want to do that.

When you are done building/creating do the following:

-take a picture and email it to me OR show me and describe it in our Flipgrid

Monday, April 6th & Tuesday, April 7th: STEAM & Enrichment combined this week

Use both days to work on an engineering challenge. There will be two different challenges to choose from. Pick which one that interests you the most :)

There are many ways you can go about both of these challenges!  I will give you some suggestions of materials you could use. However, you can use anything you find around your house. If you can't find anything to build with, I want you to just design your challenge on paper with details, labels, and color. You can explain what you would build on Flipgrid or though email.

https://flipgrid.com/63b8bc55

 password: Firsties1

Challenge 1: Design and build a boat that floats

You already have experience with this from our Penguin Raft challenge in school together. So you cannot use straws :)

Suggestions: recyclables, small piece of aluminum foil

ASK, IMAGINE, and PLAN your design. How am I going to solve this? What will my design look like? How will it float? Do I think it will hold weight?

Then, CREATE your design (if you could)

TEST your design. See if it can float in your sink, tub, or bowl of water. (ONLY with parent permssion)

IMPROVE: Does your design need to be improved? You can verbally tell me through Flipgrid, or type in an email.

*If you can't get Flipgrid to work, you can always send me a video through email or a picture.

Challenge 2: Design and build a paper bridge

Suggestions: use books, pillows, blocks

ASK, IMAGINE, and PLAN your design. How am I going to solve this? What will my design look like? Can a toy car drive under it?

Then, CREATE you design (if you could)

TEST your design. Can you build a bridge made out of paper or any materials you have?

IMPROVE: Does your design need to improved ? You can verbally tell me through Flipgrid, or type in an email.

*If you can't get Flipgrid to work, you can always send me a video through email or a picture.

Have fun with it!

Tuesday, March 31st: Enrichment

Inventor Scavenger Hunt. Here is a scavenger hunt to go on. We have learned about differeent type of inventors in all of your classes. You even did fun inventor projects. Now it is your time to go on a hunt around the house and find things that were invented. You have until next Tuesday, April 7th to work on this scavenger hunt. As you find things on the list, either take a picture of it or gather them together and take a collaborate picture of all the items you found at the end. Happy Hunting! Please have fun with this. You can make this a family hunt if you would like.  When you complete the hunt, Tweet the picture to me @amandavitalee or email me the picture. Can't wait to see what you find!

Monday, March 30th: STEAM CLASS

Last week, I asked you to complete an engineering challenge. Everyone did a great job. I loved watching you work with family members to create paper airplanes and test them out. This week let's go back to coding and practicing typing. There is a new typing website called Type Tastic. It had its own tab on the left hand side. If you have a device with a keyboard, check it out. Let me know if it works well. (It is free for the meantime) For coding, Firsties, you can log into your Code.org accounts. If you feel like challenging yourself, go to this website: www.madewithcode.com or https://blockly.games/?lang=en

 password: Firsties1

  * If you cannot get this to work. just send me a picture or video through email and I will respond back.

*You all should be familiar with this picture below. We worked together to place the steps in the Engineering Design Process in order together with the definitions. I sent home papers, " I am an Engineer." You can use those papers for this activity OR just use a plain piece of paper. I am including two pictures below the Engineering Design Process photo. The first photo lets you know what the challenge is. The second photo you can use as a tool.

Challenge: Make a paper airplane that flies

Tool: You do not need to print this out. Students can draw the type of airplane they are going to create as their "planning" on a piece of paper. They then can even use that piece of paper to create the airplane. Test out your airplane 3 different times. If you have a sibling at home or even a parent, have them create one too and have an airplane throwing contest. See which one went the farthest. Can you improve your design?

 Monday, March 16th: STEAM Class
