Health-Related Physical Fitness

  • The level of fitness needed to carry on daily routines and to be free of disease associated with a sedentary lifestyle

     

     

Cardiorespiratory Endurance

  • Known as aerobic capacity

  • The ability of the heart, blood vessels, and lungs to supply the body with oxygen and nutrients during periods of exercise

  • Sample activities—jogging, swimming, rope jumping, tag games, biking, skating, soccer

 

Body Composition

  • Ratio of body fat to lean body tissue

  • Physical activity plays an important role in controlling body composition

  • An increase in physical activity combined with a decrease in caloric consumption improves body composition

     

 Flexibility

  • The range of motion that can be achieved at a joint through any particular movement

  • Needed for good posture

  • Important to prevent injuries

  • Sample activities—stretching, dancing, yoga, Pilates, gymnastics

     

 Muscular Strength

  • Muscular strength is the capacity of a muscle to exert force against a resistance

  • Muscular strength is developed you to bear weight, use force, or use body weight

  • Sample activities—lifting weights, climbing, tumbling, throwing, kicking, lifting, gymnastics

 

Muscular Endurance

  • Muscular endurance is the capacity of a muscle to continue to perform for an extended period of time

  • Sample activities—same as muscular strength, but you perform
