    • If you took the AP Exam and scored an appropriate score, you may have already tested out of 1st semester college English (which is what this class is).  As long as the college you are anticipating attending honors AP Exam scores, and you have consulted what that college will allow, you may have already tested out of first semester college freshman English.  It is up to you to verify the policy at your intended college/university.
    • Some colleges allow you to “test” out of first semester freshmen English based on your ACT score.  I encourage you to look into your projected college requirements and consider your ACT score. It is up to you to verify the policy at your intended college/university.
      • Regardless of the AP Exam or ACT score, you can still take this class, learn the skills for this class.

  • Earning College Credit
    • You must fulfill all the requirements for your high school grade.
    • You must fulfill all the requirements and guidelines for English 101/102 as set forth by SLU.
    • You must understand that your grade received (based on the grading scale at SLU) will remain on your permanent college transcript.
    • The hours you earn are for  English credit, and they will be on file at SLU. If you will not attend SLU for college, you will have to request your transcript be sent from SLU to the university/college of your choice.

  • Commonly Asked Questions
    • I am not going to attend SLU, but I am going to stay in the state of Louisiana for school.  If I have qualified for dual enrollment and pass, will my hours transfer to another public school in the state?
      • If you are going to a public in-state school, and you pass the course, you will receive 3 hours college credit for first semester freshman English.  However, it becomes YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to request a transcript be sent from SLU to the college you are attending.  You would have to contact SLU on your own in May to ask them to send a transcript. Some colleges do have restrictions of accepting credit if you will enroll in the honors college in the fall of 2020.  It is your responsibility to uncover this information by contacting your chosen university directly.
    • What if I am going to school out of state?  Can I keep my hours if I earn them by qualifying for dual enrollment and passing the portfolio?
      • Assuming you qualify for dual enrollment and pass the course, your hours of college credit are hours you have earned.  They cannot be taken away from you.  Some schools may require that you take their Freshman English Composition course…. In that case, your hours may transfer as an English elective, but you still have earned hours college credit. It is your responsibility to contact your college of choice to find out more detailed information regarding their acceptance of DE hours.  Again, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to request a transcript be sent from SLU to the college you are attending.  You would have to contact SLU on your own in May to ask them to send a transcript.
    • What if I qualify for dual enrollment, submit all my work, and I don’t pass?
      • You will have to enroll in first semester freshman English in college.
      • Your college transcript will show you earned an F on your college transcript.
    • How will SLU determine grades?
      • During the year, SLU professors will grade your writing assignments submitted thru MWL. Grades will be averaged to compute your final grade.  You will earn a letter grade of A, B, C, D, F, or W.  A “W” means that you withdrew from the course. (Students will be counseled as to whether or not their progress suggests they should withdraw; this occurs in late in late February for year- long classes.)
      • Whatever grade is received will remain on the student’s college record/transcript.  Letter grades of A, B, C, D, or F do affect college GPA.
      • Students will have the option to withdraw from the dual enrollment class if their performance levels do not appear to be in the passing range. The withdrawal (W) will be noted on the permanent college transcript.
    • Is it possible to pass the English IV requirement for HHMS and NOT pass the  credit offered through SLU?
      • Yes.
    • Does DE affect TOPS?
      • Yes.  Although your initial acceptance/approval of TOPS is determined only by your high school GPA, once you enter college, your continued TOPS eligibility is determined by your college GPA.  The college transcript you begin to build as a DE student stays with you when you are officially a college student.  Therefore your DE classes impact your college GPA.
    • What might be a reason a student would not pass the DE 101 course?
      • THIS ANSWER CONTAINS POSSIBLE REASONS; NOT ALL REASONS FOR FAILURE ARE STATED HERE.
      • Typically, a student will not do well on the portfolio evaluation for any one reason or combination of the following reasons:
        • he/she has not done multiple revisions of each the writings assigned
        • he/she has not fulfilled the minimum length requirements of paper length
        • he/she has not developed or shown growth as a writer throughout the course of the year
        • he/she has not submitted drafts and/or tutor reports of the papers with the most revised copy
        • he/she has not learned to properly cite information within the text of the writings
        • he/she has flaws in grammar/mechanics that distract from the message of the writing or seem far lower level than college-level writing
    • What are some advantages to taking this class?
      • You will learn various writing skills/forms
      • You will learn text-marking skills which will benefit you with any reading assignments you are given for high school or college.
      • You will develop your own voice in your writing.
