Tips for successful readers:

1. Read aloud to your child for 20 minutes everyday.
Stop at some points in the story and ask your child what he/she thinks will happen next.

2. Get your child his/her own library card.

3. Put together a family newsletter for family members that live far away.
Include special news or events that happened to the family.
For example: "Timmy was 'Student of the Week' in his class."

4. Have a family reading time where everyone spends 15-20 minutes or more reading.

5. Ask family members to listen to your child read aloud while they are cooking, cleaning, driving, or relaxing.

6.  Have your child point to the words he/she is reading.
This will help them focus on that one word without skipping over it, or becoming "tongue-tieds.
