Reading Resources

Book Selection:

To determine if a book is appropriate for your child's reading level:

  • Open the book to any page.
  • Have your child read the words on that page.
  • Count the number of words that he or she does not know.
  • Use the "Five Finger" code:

One or two errors = Okay

Three errors = Student may need some support

Four errors = Student may need a lot of support

Five errors = Try a different book

Reading Strategies for Unknown Words:

  • Look at the picture for clues.
  • Look for chunks in the word, such as at in that, and in grand, or geth in together
  • Skip the word and read to the end of the sentence. Context clues may help you figure out that tricky word.
  • Ask yourself: Does this make sense? Does this sound right? Does this look right?

Reading Strategies for Comprehension:

  • At the end of each page in a narrative, ask yourself: Who or what is this page about? When and where is this taking place? What is the problem? How is the main character trying to solve the problem?
  • At the end of each page in an expository text, ask yourself: What is the author's purpose for writing this? What is the main topic? What details support this topic?
