Top 10 Ways to Help Your Child Do Well in Math

  1.  Help them master the basic facts!!!!!  (gives the answer in less than 3 seconds)
  2. Make sure your child understands mathematical concepts.  Use objects, or draw pictures and diagrams.  Restate the questions, underline clue words.
  3. Make sure they write their numbers neatly.  25% of all errors can be traced back to sloppy writing.
  4.  Provide help immediately when your child needs it.  Everything builds upon what has been previously taught. 
  5. Show them how to handle their math homework.  Study the examples on the top of the page for a reteaching moment. 
  6. Encourage your children to do more than what is assigned.  Find extra workbooks on line or at Barnes and Noble, etc.  Considerable practice is needed for mastery.
  7. Explain how to solve word problems.  “To learn to solve problems, you must solve problems.”  Read the problem several times, draw a picture, or use objects to help simplify it.
  8. Learn the vocabulary of math. 
  9. Teach them to do math in their head…use mental math.  Kids should use this frequently instead of pencil and paper.

 10.  Make Mathematics part of your child’s daily life.  It will become more meaningful when your child sees how important it is in real life.
