Decades Project

 

Objective: For students to research various aspects of American culture and politics during their assigned decade: investigate either the 1970s, 1980s or 1990s

Powerpoint Presentation/iMovie: Create a visual scrapbook that highlights key aspects of the decade.

 

This is also an opportunity for students to work on research, communication and presentation skills.

 

Directions:

  1. Students will work in small groups.

  2. Each group member will select an aspect(s) of their era (see topics below) to research

  3. Each project should include information on the following:

A)Fashion/Clothing/Hairstyles (men and women)

B)Food

C)Music

D)Entertainment/Recreation/Leisure

E)Politics

F)Economy

G)Inventions, technology

H) Literature

 

  1. This project should provide the audience with an overall idea of what happened during that decade and what it would be like to live during that time period.

  2. After researching the topic, students will need to prepare a visual scrapbook focusing on the aspects of their era mentioned above.

Project requirements:

  1. Thorough information provided about the assigned decade

  2. At least 3 different sources (in addition to the textbook) are used for researching the decade.

  3. The presentation must be multi-media

  4. Need to include a formatted bibliography

 

Step 1 - Research and Data (must use at least 3 sources)

 

1.   Fashion

A)What type of clothing was popular during that time period?

B)Popular accessories?

C)Popular hairstyles?

D)Make sure to illustrate difference between Men and Women and also social classes

 

2.   Music

A)What type music was popular during that time period?

B)What musicians were popular?

C)Try to find specific examples that could be listened to in class

 

3.  Recreation/Leisure

A)Popular activities (dances, games)

B)Any popular movie stars, sports figures

C)Food - What was the American diet like?  Popular restaurants and/or meal?  Usually cook at home or dine out?

D)        What were the popular movies, books, tv shows of the decade?

E)         Where there any sports dynasties or dominate players?

 

4.  Politics

A)Who were the presidents during the decade?

B)Any political scandals?

C)Any wars?

D)  What issues dominated politics?

 

5.  Economy

A)How was the economy at the time?

B)What was the unemployment rate?

C)Were there any shortages?

D)How was the tax rate?

 

 

6.  Inventions/Technology

Inventions/ Technology for your Decades Project

 

 Name the 3 most important inventions or technologies of your decade (in your opinion)

 Name and discuss the main individuals involved in the technology, or responsible for its invention

 Describe the technology and how it works

 Discuss how this technology invention was, or is used

 Discuss the implications the invention or technology has on the American public and/or the world

 

 

 

7.   History

  1. If you were in charge of writing a chapter of a history book about your decade, what ONE event would you put in the book?    Give an explanation of the event and explain why you chose it.

 

8. Literature

a) Choose one significant piece of literature (book, poem, or short story) written in this decade.

b) Name title, author, and genre

c) Explain why this piece of literature was important to the time period.

d) Include the poem or an excerpt from the book or short story in your presentation.  

 

 

Step 2 - Project

  1. Develop presentation that addresses all aspects of the decade.   (You may find some questions do not have an answer.  Ex:   Where there any wars?   If there were not you do not have to mention wars  BUT you do need to research each topic fully)

  2. Be sure to include maps, graphs, photographs or other visuals to illustrate information about the time (either in the scrapbook or in the presentation.

  3. Include a TYPED bibliography (MLA or APA format)/work cited

AND include a typed list of all group members and what each group member was responsible for.    (This will be turned in on Google Classroom)
