What is Accelerated Reader?

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer based, reading management and motivational system designed to complement existing classroom literacy programs for grades K-12. AR’s goal is to motivate students to read using an individualized goal/point system. Student’s individual goals are based on their reading grade equivalent (GE) score from a standardized test, such as STAR Reading, coupled with the amount of time the student is able to devote to reading. AR translates GE scores into a zone of proximal development (ZPD) range that is used to determine the level of books from which the student can select.

Students choose books to read from the school’s selected collection of books for which they have AR tests. AR provides extensive lists with tens of thousands of book titles and their corresponding grade levels and point values. The list of tests available at Hancock Creek is available on the school website. Books are assigned a point value based on the number of words contained and its reading difficulty, as derived from a formula. This formula takes into consideration the number of syllables in words and sentence complexity.

AR software provides comprehension tests that uses a multiple-choice question format. The technology presents test scores, points earned, and keeps records of books read. The test gives immediate feedback such as the number of points earned and provides the child with the opportunity to review any incorrect answers. The student must score at least 60% to earn any points.

What you need to know about A.R. at Hancock Creek Elementary School?

In our school library, the students will be able to check out books that are on their current level.  Please make sure that they read their library books at home every night. At home reading of A.R. materials is the required homework for 2017-18 school year. Primary grades, K-2, are required to read a minimum of 20 minutes nightly. It would be best if your child could read with you, another adult, or even an older sibling.

Please make sure that your child brings their books to school every day.

How can I check my child's AR progress?

Please email me if you have trouble accessing Home Connect or need your child's student ID number. I'll be glad to help in any way.

What are the AR goals for first grade?

Each student will have an individualized AR goal. Student’s individual goals are based on their reading grade equivalent (GE) score from a standardized test, such as the STAR Reading test. Students are expected to read 20 minutes per night, take tests on books within his/her zone of proximal development (ZPD) range and maintain an average test score of 85% or higher.

What is the Principal's AR Party?

The Principal's Party is a quarterly celebration of student's reading accomplishments. The requirements for the Principal's Party are maintaining an average AR test score of 85% or higher, meeting individualized AR point goals and reading within the ATOS book level. Any student meeting the requirements can attend the Principal's AR Party.
