Classroom Procedures and Routines

1.   Entering the Classroom—Line up at the outside door orderly.  Students who are talking, making loud noises, or refusing to enter in an orderly manner will not be permitted to enter the classroom, which will result in a tardy.   Upon entering the classroom, students should sit in their assigned seat and begin the Problem of the Day.  Students must also be in proper uniform daily-- Proper uniform includes:  Wearing the proper color uniform shirt and pants, belt, shirt tucked into pants, ID displayed properly (worn on lanyard around the neck or proper temporary ID if an ID is forgotten at home).  Students not in proper uniform will NOT BE ALLOWED to enter the classroom!

2.  Tardies—Students who are late to class must report to the office to get a tardy.  NO EXCEPTIONS!!! Problem of the Day is completed the first 5 minutes of class time.  If students have to go to the office for tardies, they will not get extended time to complete it once they return to class.  Problem of the Day is a 12 point grade per week.  If Problem of the Day is not completed daily it will affect the student’s grade.  2 tardies will result in an afternoon detention.  Further tardies will result in more severe consequences.

3.  Prepare Materials—Take out Problem of the Day from binder, homework, pencils, paper, etc.  MATH can ONLY be completed in pencil.  PENS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN MY CLASSROOM!!  STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST 3 SHARPENED PENCILS FOR CLASS!!  Once instruction has begun, students cannot get up to sharpen and will not be given pencils in the middle of class.  If a student doesn’t come to class with their pencils, they just communicate this to the teacher at the beginning of class, so they can purchase a pencil or a lead pen.  Pencils can only be sharpened at the beginning of class during Problem of the Day time.   If a student forgets materials (paper, pencils, books, etc), they will be penalized for not being prepared.  Only pencils can be purchased without penalty.

4.    Complete and Review Problem of the Day
5.    Homework Check & Discussion-- Homework must be completed daily.  Students will be given a homework chart to copy homework down everyday.  Homework is posted on the board when the students walk into the classroom daily.  Homework can also be accessed via Oncourse on the St. Martin Parish School board website under the “Parents” tab.  Failure to complete homework will result in the student losing privileges and lowered grades.  Practice is key in learning Math concepts.  We will be covering about 3 skills a week.  Students need to practice because they will not discover if they do not understand something until they have the exam, which will be too late to ask questions.

6.    New Lesson Structure:
Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate

Students are required to actively participate daily.  Students CANNOT pick and choose what they will and will not complete.

7.  Classroom Jobs—Students will be assigned basic classroom jobs such as passing out paper, sharpening pencils, etc.  These students will get a Foster Fleur de Lis at the end of the month as a reward to be redeemed for a gift card and 10 tickets to be redeemed for edible treats during lunch time on Mondays and Fridays.

8.  School Announcements—When an announcement is made over the intercom, there is to be no talking or making noise.

9.  Going to the Restroom— Classes are only 50 minutes long.  All time is needed for instruction.  I have been instructed not to give passes to limit passes, so please do not ask for a pass unless you have a true emergency or a medical excuse on file from a Medical Doctor.  Students have time before school, lunch time, and in between classes (if needed) to take care of bathroom needs and get water.

10.  Absences and Makeup Work-- Students are responsible for getting materials missed on an excused absence.  Students should check the makeup work folder (By hour on the wall) for materials missed.  3 days are given to make up work for approved excused absences.  Excuses accepted are those from the doctor’s office, the health center, and/or an obituary.  No home excuses are accepted.  If exams are missed, with no excuse provided, students will receive only 70% score of the makeup test taken, and have only 3 days to makeup the exam.  Absences due to suspension must be made up within 3 days of returning to school.  The most the student can earn on an exam is 70% D.  This is the highest score, even if everything is correct.  Failure to makeup the exam within 3 days will result in a 0/F on that assignment or exam. Students can makeup exams in the morning or during PE time (If permitted by Coaches), not during class, as new lessons cannot be missed to make up what was missed.  The student must get with me to schedule a makeup exam time.  I WILL NOT remind them to makeup work they miss!
11.    Leave the classroom ONLY when Dismissed.  The bell does not dismiss students.  I will dismiss the students by teams at the sound of the bell once all materials are properly put away and there is no noise within the classroom.  If students are not following exit procedures, they will not be allowed to leave until they properly follow dismissal rules.  Excuses will ONLY be given if the teacher keeps a student for an instructional reason.   A students’ failure to follow classroom procedures when exiting the room may result in a tardy to their next class.
