Course Description
and Objectives:

Musical Theatre focuses on the technical and performance aspects of acting, singing, and dancing as one discipline rather than three separate.  Students will work on their technique in order to hone their craft; analyze scripts, scores and performances; and understand and appreciate the various eras of the American Musical Theatre.  

 

Course Requirements:

        • Consistent attendance
        • Respectful attitude towards instructors and classmates
        • Participation at performance level
        • Completion of assignments both written and performed

 

Appearance:

Students are required to enter class and check in with Ms. Alexander each day in full uniform (B’s and ID’s).   On dance days, students must check in before proceeding to the changing room and change back into uniform upon leaving at the end of class.  Students should expect to dance or do some level of movement (musical staging) EVERYDAY.

 

Appropriate attire for class:

        • Clothing should never obscure the line of the body (t-shirt or leotard, leggings preferred; no baggy sweaters, sweatpants, mini skirts, etc.)
        • MT Classes only: Black or tan jazz shoes - see Ms. Alexander for purchasing information
        • MT2/3 ladies only – tan or black character shoes
        • Long hair should always be pulled back into a ponytail (bring extra hair ties)
        • All jewelry should be removed
        • No gum, food, or drinks (except water bottles with a top) 

        • NO JEANS, TIGHT PANTS, SHORT SHORTS, BAGGY SWEATS, TANK TOPS, or HATS.

 

Materials needed for class:

        • Chromebook
        • Folder with pockets (for class use only)
        • Single subject notebook (for class use only)
        • 3 ring binder with sheet protectors (for class use only)
        • Appropriate clothing, hair and shoes (see attire list above)
        • Water bottle (please fill before class begins)

 

*TURN ALL CELL PHONES OFF DURING CLASS. IF YOU CANNOT COMPLY WITH THIS, YOU MAY BE ASKED TO LEAVE THE CLASS!!


 

GRADING POLICY:

Participation/Classwork: 60%

Homework: 20%

Practical and Written Exams:  15%

Practical and Written Quizzes:  5%

 

**Late homework, projects or papers (not turned in by the end of the school day) will have 10 points deducted for every day late. Tests (written or movement) missed due to absence must be made up within 5 days.

 

PARTICIPATION/PREPAREDNESS:

Participation is worth 60% of your grade.  There are no exceptions for not participating. If a student does not participate for a medical reason a note is required.

 

Students will be assessed weekly on the following (√+ = 100%, √ = 70%, √- = 0%):

                • Attendance/Promptness
                • Behavior In Class/Attitude
                • Concentration
                • Coordination
                • Musicality
                • Performance Quality 


  

**Please make an effort to use the bathroom and get water before class begins as leaving in and out of class is discouraged with the exception of health issues and emergencies.

 

ADMINISTRATION POLICY

        • Cell phone violation:  First two offenses = SASH; 3rd offense will result in suspension.
        • Uniform violation:  7th violation = suspension; 8th violation = exclusion from all clubs, activities and on-stage graduation.
