Dance I Syllabus

Dance I is a movement and theory based class designed to teach the foundations of dance technique and artistry. The elements that will be studied include:

 

* Dance Technique

* Elements & Principles of Dance Composition

* Dance History/Culture

* Performance

 

It is expected all students will be respectful of their peers and teachers in regard to race, religion, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, learning styles, physical disabilities and personal values. Disrespectful students may be asked to leave class and charged with SASH and a grade reduction.  

 

GRADING POLICY:

 

Participation/Classwork: 60%

Homework/Projects: 20%

Movement/Written Exams: 15%

Quizzes: 5%

 

*Late homework (not turned by the end of the school day) will not be accepted.

*Tests (written or movement) missed due to absence must be made up within 5 days.

*Any late projects or papers will have 10 points deducted for every day late. After 5 days, projects will not be accepted and a failing grade will be given.

 

***Participation in the May Dance Concert is COMPULSORY.*** 

 

PARTICIPATION/PREPAREDNESS:

 

Participation is worth 60% of your grade. This is a DANCE class; there are no exceptions for not participating. If a student does not participate for a medical reason, a note is required.

 

Students will be assessed weekly on the following (√+ = 100%, √ = 70%, √- = 0%):

 

        • Attendance/Promptness
        • Behavior In Class/Attitude
        • Concentration
        • Coordination
        • Musicality
        • Performance Quality 

 

Dance etiquette of a prepared dancer:

 

        • Comes to class wearing required dancewear.
        • Ties his/her hair back.
        • Brings a pen, notebook and other required materials to class.
        • Gets rid of gum prior to class.
        • Does not eat or drink in the dance studio. Water only!
        • Turn off all cell phones during class; failure to do so will result in a √ - for the day.

 

Dance etiquette of a dancer who fully participates:

 

        • Reports DIRECTLY to the dance studio after changing and begins stretching.
        • Gives everything his/her best shot and does NOT complain.
        • Stays quiet and listens while the teacher gives corrections to peers.
        • Asks questions, practices phrases/movements and helps classmates.
        • Makes an effort to use the bathroom and fill water bottles before class begins. Leaving in and out of class is discouraged with the exception of health issues and emergencies.

 

**DANCERS ARE REQUIRED TO PERFORM IN THE SPRING DANCE CONCERT**

 

CLOTHING REQUIREMENTS

 

Students are required to enter class and check in each day in full uniform (B’s and ID’s) before proceeding to the changing room. They must also change back into uniform before leaving at the end of class. All students must wear clothes that allow for freedom of movement and show the line of the body:

 

          • Girls: Dance pants, leggings, or tights w/shorts.
          • Boys: Sweat pants or shorts are acceptable.
          • Fitted t-shirt or appropriate tank top may be worn.
          • Hair should be pulled back and away from the face (always have extra hair ties).
          • Remove all jewelry including necklaces, bracelets and dangly earrings. Ear studs are acceptable, but hoops are not.
          • Bare feet, jazz shoes, or ballet shoes are required for this course.

 

 

ADMINISTRATION DISCIPLINARY POLICY

 

        • Cell phone violation:  First two offenses = SASH; 3rd offense will result in suspension.
        • Uniform violation:  7th violation = suspension; 8th violation = exclusion from all clubs, activities and on-stage graduation.
