Course Description

This class offers students an introduction to the history of African American theatre, from the nineteenth century to the modern day, and examines historical theater movements within specific social, political, and cultural contexts.

Course Objective:  

Students will Identify key movements, contributions, and productions in American theater history by African American artists; analyze ways in which theater added to black political and social movements from the nineteenth century to today; and demonstrate an understanding of theatrical concepts.  

 

Course Requirements:

·       Consistent attendance 

·       Respectful attitude towards instructors and classmates 

·       Participation at performance level 

·       Completion of assignments both written and performed 

 

Appearance:

It is essential that students dress appropriately for class in order to fully participate without restrictions. You will be active most days and therefore need to wear comfortable clothing you can move in. **B’s and ID’s and full BHS approved uniform required.**

 

Appropriate attire for class: 

·       Comfortable clothing you can move/stretch in

·       Long hair should always be pulled back into a ponytail

·       No gum, food, or drinks (but lots of water)

·       Socks for Marley dance floor (no shoes on Marley)

 

Device Policy:

Students must have their school issued device for class every day. Unless announced officially, there is NO CELL PHONE USE in class.

 

BHS Discipline Policy:

Please refer to the updated policy from BHS administration.

 

GRADING POLICY:

Participation/Classwork: 60%

Homework: 20%

Practical and Written Exams:  15%

Practical and Written Quizzes:  5%

 

*Late homework or projects (not turned in by 2:40pm) will have 10 points deducted for every day late.

 

*Tests (written or practical) missed due to absence must be made up within 5 days.

 

PARTICIPATION/PREPAREDNESS:

Participation is worth 60% of your grade.  There are no exceptions for not participating. If a student does not participate for a medical reason a note is required. 

Students will be assessed weekly on the following (√+ = 100%, √ = 70%, √- = 0%):

 

·      Engagement/Work Ethic

·       Behavior In Class/Attitude

·       Preparedness

·       Problem Solving 

·       Teamwork/Respect

 

THEATRE CRITIQUES

  • Students must write 2 critical reviews/evaluations per year. 

  • Evaluations MUST be on BHS school plays presented during the school year. Either BHS Drama Productions or a professional theatre company show is fine. (Shows produced by a children’s theatre company or church are not acceptable for this assignment.)

  • Reviews are assessed for their content and articulation (an outline   of proper form will be supplied by the teacher.)

  • Opportunity to view professional productions will be given in the form of school trips.

  • Reviews are due within two (2) weeks of viewing. 

 

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENT

Students will be required to perform during the school year. These informal presentations are designed to build confidence, imagination and joy of expression by providing a practical stage experience. 

 

*Please make an effort to use the bathroom and get water before class begins as leaving in and out of class is discouraged with the exception of health issues and emergencies.
