Accelerated Reading

Accelerated Reading (AR) is a computer program that involves reading leveled books, taking multiple choice quizzes on the computer and earning points and certificates along the way.

Each child will be assigned a reading range that is just-right for them, and they are then asked to read books within that range.  The levels indicate a grade and month level.  For example, a level 5.2 means 5th grade, 2nd month of school.  Students are expected to read AR books and take quizzes to meet a goal that we will set together each marking period.  It will be part of their overll reading average.

If you are unsure if the book your child chooses is an AR book, or if you'd like to know the level in advance, use the following website: www.arbookfind.com.  Please note: AR quizzes can only be taken in school during school hours.

Every time a quiz is taken, a print-out of the results of that quiz will be placed in a special reading binder where the students will keep track of the scores and points earned.  They will also be keeping track of the genres they are reading this year and graphing the data.  The point of this is to let children see what types of books they typically read and to encourage them to branch out and choose other genres of books.  Students who read many different genres, are more likely to become better readers.

You can access AR at home so you can see how your child is progressing.  You'll be able to see their overall average, quizzes they've taken and points they've earned.
