How is a Reader's Workshop conducted?

Teacher Read Aloud & Mini Lesson: 10-15 Minutes

The teacher will pick a book or text that pertains to the reading strategy that will be taught. The teacher uses the read aloud to model good reading habits while the students transform into active listeners. During the mini-lesson, the students will participate in an active engagement segment where they will turn and talk to a peer about the read aloud.

Independent Reading: 20 Minutes
After the mini-lesson, the students are able to pick a spot in the room and read independently while they are practicing the reading strategy that was taught during the mini-lesson. During this time, the teacher will be conferencing with students.

Closing Meeting: 10 Minutes

The closing meeting takes place on the reading rug. As a class, we share our reflections of the strategies we used during our independent reading time.
