How is a Writer's Workshop conducted?

  • Mini Lesson: 10-15 Minutes
The teacher uses this time to model a certain writing skill that the lesson will be focused on. The teacher may even use a mentor text to help model how an author will use a strategy. During the mini lesson, the students will participate in an active engagement segment where they will turn and talk to a peer about the stories they are writing and how they would implement the strategy.

  • Independent Writing: 20-40 Minutes
After the mini lesson, the students will transform into writers and add the strategy that was just taught during the mini lesson. As the students write, the teacher conducts writing conferences with each student to assess and reflect on their stories.

  • Sharing: 5-10 Minutes

The students take turns sitting in the author's chair to share their writing. As a class, we take the time to reflect on each other's writing to give suggestions and celebrate great writing.
