English I/ IE:

This course is required to graduate.  The emphasis of this course is on reading and writing.  Short stories, cinematic techniques, nonfiction essays, poetry, drama and the novel will all be studied.  Students will be required to write multiple essays and complete a research with MLA documentation.  Students will also be required to read novels outside of class.  Regular vocabulary, grammar and writing assignments will occur within the context of the literary selections to help students prepare for the ACT test.

 

This course will cover the following units/ writing workshops:

 

First semester:

 

Unit 1:  An Emerging Nation / Early American Writing (1600-1800)

Unit 2:  Celebrating the Individual / American Romanticism (1800-1855)

Unit 3:  An Age of Transition / From Romanticism to Realism (1855-1870)

 

Second semester:

 

Unit 4:  Capturing the American Landscape / Regionalism and Naturalism (1870-1910)

Unit 5:  A Changing Awareness / The Harlem Renaissance and Modernism (1910-1940)

Unit 6:  New Perspectives / Contemporary Literature (1940-present)
