English I/ IE:
This course is required to graduate. The emphasis of this course is on reading and writing. Short stories, cinematic techniques, nonfiction essays, poetry, drama and the novel will all be studied. Students will be required to write multiple essays and complete a research with MLA documentation. Students will also be required to read novels outside of class. Regular vocabulary, grammar and writing assignments will occur within the context of the literary selections to help students prepare for the LEAP 2025 test.
This course will cover the following units/ writing workshops:
First semester:
Unit 1: Telling Details / The Writing Process / Literary analysis / Poetry
Unit 1 pt. 2 : Telling Details / Narrative
Unit 2: Poetry unit
Second semester:
Unit 3: Compelling evidence / Argumentative essay
Unit 4: Pivotal Words and Phrases / Oral recitation
Honors only: The emphasis of this course is also on reading and writing with a more intensive focus on literature, vocabulary and writing. Additional homework and reading assignments are required.
