W.S.M.C.S. Instrumental Music Grading

Instrumental Music students will receive a grade on their report card reflecting their work and progress in instrumental lessons and ensemble rehearsals:

S = Satisfactory (Grade 70-100)

U = UnSatisfactory (Grade 50-69)

The following breakdown will be used for each marking period:

Participation/Attendance: 70%

C.A.R.E.S. : 15%

Musicianship: 10%

District Assessment/Badge Progress: 5%

Students will also receive a quarterly progress report with their exact number grade based on the above categories.

Classwork

A musician's classwork is their participation during meeting times and is weighted the heaviest!  Participation points will be awarded every lesson/ensemble in the following way:

On time - 1 point
Have instrument - 1 point
Proper Etiquette (correct behavior/following directions) - 1 point
Prepared assignments (evidence of practice) and prepared supplies (binder, music, pencil, online materials, etc.)
Total each meeting time - 4 points

4pts = A         3pts = B         2pts = C         1pt = D         0pts/skips class = F

Students will receive a grade for every lesson that is scheduled. If a student needs to miss a lesson they must see me to schedule a Make-Up lesson.

All lessons will be virtual until further notice.

Tests

All students will keep a Musician Portfolio. This portfolio will be created in Google Slides and will include student information, student self-assessments, student recordings, student reflections, and original student content that will reflect their musical and personal growth throughout the year.

The Performance portion of their portfolio will be counted as test grades. Each marking period students will need to add to and update their portfolio with at least two recordings or playing tests. Playing tests will be recorded and submitted by students using either Schoology or Soundtrap. Students may practice and re-record their assignments as many times as they like.

Students can choose to record an exercise from their Badge Assignments or excerpts from any repertoire, however, student choice is a part of the rubric and should reflect the student's skills and knowledge of musical content–students should choose exercises and excerpts that reflect their skills and musical abilities.

Concerts are extensions of the classroom; therefore attendance and proper participation are expected and graded. During COVID-19, however, we will not be having public concerts but we will be recording and publishing recordings of student performances - these are to be treated as concerts and will also be graded as tests.

Quizzes

The sections of the student's Musician Portfolio that include concert/performance reflections, music theory, and music history will count as quiz grades.

Boomcard assignments and other online content or games related to music theory and musical knowledge will also count as quiz grades.

District Assessment

Each marking period students will take a district assessment in the form of a playing test and/or a written/online test of musical knowledge and music theory studied that marking period.
