Weekly In-Class Reading- We will begin our first unit during the first week of school, and it is a unit about hurricanes.  We will be exploring nonfiction as well as fiction passages, and we will do all sorts of activities to compliment our lessons.  This unit will last about 5 weeks, and the novel we will study is My Louisiana Sky.

Skill of the Week- Each week we will focus on various skills that we apply while exploring our units, etc.  Students will be given notes, in the form of their interactive notebooks, that will help guide them in their studies.

Comprehension Assessment- When we study a unit, comprehension questions on quizzes will be teacher created.  These questions will be provided in the form of either an online or a paper/pencil quiz (mostly online), and they will consist of open response questions, as well as multiple choice, matching, or true/falsen questions.  Additionally, students will have cold read passages that they will need to read and will earn TSA grades as they are administered. Answering open response questions COMPLETELY is critically important when trying to master 4th grade reading instruction.  In order to score all points, students must answer the questions with correct information, and they must write all answers in complete sentences, with correct punctuation/capitalization.  Additionally, providing cited evidence for provided answers is a must.

STAR Reading-Students will take the STAR Reading assessment each month in order monitor progress, and data reports will be sent home in the beginning, middle, and end of the school year.  This assessment tool measures student performance as well as identifies strengths/weaknesses.  These results are used to detemine how to remediate, enrich, and challenge students in the area of Reading.  This assessment instrument is also very accurate in predicting student performance on Spring Testing.

Accelerated Reading-Students will be encouraged strongly to participate in the school reading program.  This year, all incentives will be created by our school librarian, and goals will be established as a result of collaboration with the librarian and teacher.  Information will be sent home in order for parents to monitor student progress.
