THE UNITED STATES                                 VOCABULARY FOR CHAPTER 5

THE STRUGGLE TO FOUND COLONIES

 

1. charter: Official document giving a person or group permission to do something

 

2. stock: Share (or part ownership) in a company

 

3. cash crop: Crop grown to be sold for a profit

 

4. indentured servant: Person who agreed to work for someone for a certain amount of time in exchange for the cost of the voyage to North America

 

5. House of Burgesses: Lawmaking assembly in colonial Virginia

 

6. Northwest Passage: Water route that explorers hoped would flow through North America, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans

 

7. Pilgrim: Person who travels to a new place for religious reasons

 

8 Separatists: Group of people from England who wanted to separate themselves from the Church of England. Some traveled to North America in search of religious freedom.

 

9. persecution: Unjust treatment because of one’s beliefs

 

10. Mayflower Compact: Plan of government written by the Pilgrims who sailed on the Mayflower.

 

11. Puritans: Group of people who wanted to “purify” the Church of England. They established the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630.  

 

12. dissenter: Person whose views differ from those of his or her leader

 

13. proprietor: Owner

 

14. debtor: Person who owes money
